We all know I’m a sucker for a time travel/reincarnation plot line, and I’d actually seen this one around before… so I was super excited to snag the ARC.

“Do you recall how much our marriage cost?” Countess Bianca de Arno was infamous throughout the land as a haughty, extravagant woman who spurned her spouse, neglected her duties, and spent her estate’s money with wild abandon—in her first life, that is! After meeting a miserable and lonely end following the tragic death of her heroic husband, Bianca wakes up back in the castle as her nineteen-year-old self. It’s not exactly the second chance she’d prayed for, but she’ll do anything to avoid the cold and hunger that plagued her before. In fact, she’s even willing to make amends with the indifferent man she calls her husband—but with an entire lifetime of misunderstandings between them, it’ll take more than a few clumsy advances to win him over!

The Basics:

Art: 5/5

Gorgeous, although the watermark on the ARC copy is huge.

Characters: 5/5

They’re both pretty clumsy personality-wise, which makes for some fun interactions but fuels the miscommunication.

Story/Plot: 4/5

I’m not exactly sure what the age gap is, but I believe it’s fairly large? However, she returned to when she was 18 and died after 30 in her previous life, so technically she’s older than him now? Idk… does that math check out?

The miscommunication trope is HUGE here… and not my favorite, but I didn’t mind it too much this time. It definitely leans more historical than fantasy so far. The FL even comments that being a noblewoman without a child at 18 would make people talk.

Not much is revealed about her past life yet, and it’s clear this volume is just setting the stage for the story.

It leans more toward comedy right now, but I think we’ll get some solid royal politics as the series develops.

Writing/Dialouge: 5/5

I didn’t notice any issues here.

Extras:

Sweetness: 1/5

again, more of a comedy and the romance hasn’t really started yet

Spice level: 0/5

there was like one flashback panel from her previous life

Second-hand Embarrassment: 0/5

In Conclusion:

4 stars! Marriage of Convenience, Vol. 1 walks the line well between comedy, politics, and hints of romance. It leans on miscommunication and two clumsy leads you can’t help but love.

The only thing I’m worried about is the misuse / overuse of the miscommunication trope going forward. It’s definitely not a stand out for the genre yet, but I think it has potential to be!

Marriage of Convenience

📌historical romantasy

📌reincarnation/regression (what is the proper term? lol)

📌slow burn

📌age gap?
