Where law means nothing, life becomes about one thing: control. In the underground society of shady dealings and everyday crime, only the most powerful thrive.

Apollo isn’t one of them. He’s a doll, an escort available to the most important figures of the local crime world, and an omega lover to the boss of the organization. Apollo remembers how hard life used to be before Jasper, and he’s happy enough with how things are most of the time… Even if his relationship might not be as great as he deludes himself into believing.

Kobe’s place appears to be a bit more desirable in the hierarchy, despite him being an omega in an alpha-dominated industry. He’s the gang leader’s new driver, and someone who’s asked to take care of things that need taking care of from time to time. But even he feels unfulfilled and unsteady in his position, constantly torn by the war of good and evil around him and inside himself. While he secretly wishes to leave the life of danger behind, he stays for the money it brings him and his family. After all, he’s gone too far to back out now.

When the two men meet and strike an unusual, delicate connection, they realize that they both could be exactly the push each has been looking for in finally living the life they want. But life is hardly ever easy, especially when one surrounds themselves with those who know only power over people, and they don’t take kindly to parting with it…

Toy No More is a non-shifter, M/M omegaverse standalone romance novel set in Kat Sinclair’s venusverse. It’s an angsty, dark story featuring a HEA, explicit scenes and topics, abuse, and dub-con. A complete list of CWs can be found at the beginning of the book or on the author’s website.

I knew I was in for a treat and that this author was serious about the omegaverse (or Venusverse), from the incredibly detailed intro. And I mean detailed, haha.

While yes, this was a treat to read and I genuinely enjoyed this book…it was way more brutal than I thought it was going to be.

I went in thinking this would be a dark romance, but it leaned more toward a dark story with a really solid romance between the two MCs. I mean, yes, it is a dark romance… just not in the way I was expecting. If that makes sense….

This felt wayyy less tropey or gimmicky than a lot of other dark romances I’ve read, and I appreciated that. This was my first time reading anything by this author, and I would 100% read more of their books. I thought the writing was great and that they handled the darker topics skillfully.

The author includes a list of content warnings at the beginning, and I think they were adequate—definitely one you’ll want to check before reading.

what didn’t work:

Jasper, the mega alphahole, he was too easy of a character. He was one-dimensional, existing purely as a villain to drive the plot with no real motivation beyond “I’m an alpha, I want more.” It just didn’t feel nuanced and made me want to gently yell at Apollo. lol

There was also one other thing that didn’t quite work for me, but I can’t explain it without diving into major spoilers. While I personally didn’t like it, I’ll admit it did make the story feel more grounded and realistic.

In conclusion:

4 hearts! If you enjoy this genre, this could easily be a 5-star read for you. I was genuinely impressed by the writing and story—seriously, when do we ever get omega x omega?! I’d absolutely love to read more from this author.
