Happy Monday! I’ve been consuming literature at an alarming rate, so before I burn out, I’m trying to schedule as many posts as possible, lol. Anyway, here is Manga Monday with a cute Romeo & Juliet-themed manga.

Two rival schools stand next door to each other: one for elite ladies, one for good-for-nothing boys. But one of those boys might just be a naturally chivalrous diamond in the rough, and one of those girls might be a little more open-minded than is proper…

This cute and twisty manga spin on Romeo and Juliet is the latest hit in Japan, coming to print from a successful digital-first release!

Capulet & Montague, Chidori & Kikyo

Chidori High is a boys’ school that takes in the dregs of society with the lowest grades. Next door stands Kikyo Girls’ High, where the wealthy, high-class families send their precious daughters. Chidori second-year Rintaro, who has a fierce face but a gentle heart, is helping at his family’s patisserie when he meets a girl named Kaoruko. The two hit it off right away…but this blissful peace is quickly disturbed when Rintaro discovers that Kaoruko is actually a student at Kikyo. Worse, she doesn’t seem to realize what a huge problem this really is! Will these two be able to forge a path for themselves, and sidestep the traps (metaphorical and literal) laid by their classmates?

A delinquent-looking boy who’s awkward but really kind x a straightforward girl who loves to eat cake.

The art style is great. The main characters are drawn as complete opposites, but they both look cute.

It’s a bit slow, but it’s very sweet, and Rintaro looks absolutely adorable in his little bakery outfit. We got to see a lot of Rintaro, and that’s why he’s my favorite. Even his fellow ‘delinquent’ friends are likable and seem to look out for him in their own way. Kaoruko is adorable too, but we didn’t get to know too much about her. I’m going to stick with this manga for at least another volume to see if it picks up.

I get the high school rivalry and Romeo and Juliet vibes, but the seething rage from the girls’ high school is way over the top. The reason wasn’t revealed, but I think it will be in the next volume.

I’ll probably wait to read the next volume digitally and then decide if I want to add this to the physical collection.

As far as Volume 1 goes, if you’re looking for something wholesome and full of adorableness with a low-stakes plot, I would recommend it. I’m quite curious to see where this manga will go, considering it’s based on Romeo and Juliet. Are we going to keep the wholesome vibes, or is it going to turn into something else completely?

Also, after looking at the artist’s Twitter, I feel like this is going to be a manga where I fall in love with the side characters rather than the main characters, haha.

As always, thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for the ARC copy in exchange for my honest review~
