Welcome to the Day 1 roundup! I got through 54 pages yesterday (that is, yesterday night) and here are all the things I noticed.
First of all, Feyre’s sisters are so much worse than I remember. I’ve spent an embarrassing amount of time defending the two of them (later on in the series), so I honestly thought, there’s no way they’re as bad as I remember. Somehow, they’re worse. Not only are they both clearly aware that Feyre, their youngest sister, is nearly killing herself to support three other grown-up human beings, but they seem to enjoy straight-up bullying her. And frankly, I don’t think any built-up resentment–over Feyre taking control or something else–can justify it.
I also noticed that several times, Feyre mentions the humans’ ‘long-forgotten gods’ whose names have been forgotten but who are distinctly separate from the fae. Sounds like something related to a certain set of beings from the new Crescent City books anyone??
I also forget how basic and fairy-centric the beginning of this book is. Ash arrows and faeries who can’t lie?? I feel like I’m back in An Enchantment of Ravens. And while I’m on the subject of the fae, oh my god Tamlin’s beast form had me cackling. I mean–as large as a horse, with a feline body, a wolfish head, and elk-like horns, black, dagger-like claws and yellow eyes…I was today years old when I realised that Tamlin in animal form probably moves on all fours.
I thought when I typed out my reactions to the first few chapters of this book I would be writing about how annoying Feyre is, but to be honest…so far, she passes the smell test. I’m here for the nihilism and the cynicism of a starving Feyre whose family is, can I just say once more, the worst.
Let me know what you think!
