This was a fairly straightforward month of reading, though I sadly wrapped up my long Stormlight archive marathon—just in time for my ACOTAR marathon next month (come join me!)

Rhythm of War by Brandon Sanderson

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Yes, you should read The Stormlight Archive. No, there is no chance of it disappointing you. And if you want more than that, here’s a detailed list of everything Brandon Sanderson is epically good at (and a few things he’s not – after all, what kind of blogger would I be…)

Masters of Death by Olivie Blake

Rating: 2 out of 5.

Olivie Blake is an automatic buy for me, so why was I so uninspired by Masters of Death?? It’s supremely clever and whimsical and it’s the same writing I love so much. I honestly think the issue is that it’s too clever and whimsical, getting caught up in the fun concepts and dexterous writing when we should have been getting…well, a story. Not that the characters aren’t fun and great in theory, but after reading the book, I just wasn’t invested in them or the stakes. Also I felt like I was reading a Terry Pratchett knockoff.

Our Wives Under the Sea by Julia Armfield

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I’m not normally one for horror, but this book was stunning. It’s creepy and sad, but not in an I-want-to-bawl kind of way, more in a dark-cloud-reverbed-lana-del-rey way. And did I mention it’s creepy?? I’ll be thinking about this strange, uncanny, tenderly written novel for a long time.

Manga/Webtoons

Villains are Destined to Die

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A reread for Webtoon Wednesday. If you’re a fan of compelling villain isekai stories, this one is an absolute must-read. It’s incredibly popular for good reason.

Yakuza Fiancé: Raise wa Tanin ga Il

Rating: 5 out of 5.

A reread for Manga Monday. One of my all-time favorite yakuza manga ever written…I just love this manga so much haha.
