For my Storygraph reading goal this year, I went even more conservative than I was last year. And after a slump of zero books finished in March, I am now 15 books ahead of my goal. Is this partly due to not-so-great romance novels? Sure. But it’s equally thanks to great series like Temeraire and, now, The Stormlight Archive.

The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I have no idea what to compare this to, because it is so much more propulsive and engaging than a lot of the high fantasy I’m used to reading—that is, Priory of the Orange Tree, Lord of the Rings, or even Shadow of the Gods. I am obsessed with all of these characters and finished this book at 3 am, trying to restrain myself from screaming because that’s not a polite thing to do that late at night. I’ll do a full review of the Stormlight Archive once I’m all done with it (so far…why oh why did I choose a series that’s not finished yet??)

Blood of Tyrants/League of Dragons (Temeraire) by Naomi Novik

Rating: 5 out of 5.

This series was a reread for me, so I have to admit that by the time I got to the final book, League of Dragons, there were certain plot points I was impatient for. Overall, the series lives up to my glowing memory of it, which is impressive in itself. In my opinion, the second and third ones are the best, and the sixth and seventh are the slowest moving. (That said, once you get to the eight and ninth it really picks up again!) I can honestly say I don’t see myself listening to a better audiobook ever.

Stone Blind by Natalie Haynes

Rating: 2 out of 5.

See how on the cover of this novel it says “Medusa’s Story”? And how it’s got a big ol’ picture of Medusa on the cover? Yeah, well when you read this novel, you get maybe 20% from Medusa’s POV, and relatively little character growth or complexity in those sections. The rest of the book generally centres around other women loosely (oh so loosely) related to Medusa’s story: Athene (who is kind of petulant, impatient, and slow on the uptake with many things despite being the god of wisdom??), Andromeda and Cassiope, Danae, Hera, and the other two Gorgon sisters. Full disappointed review coming soon…

Blood Oath series by R.L. Caulder (4 Books)

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I plan on doing a full review of this series, because. itis a pretty effective Zodiac Academy dupe to me. Not the best written, but all the tropes are supremely well done…and it’s a why choose, so we don’t have any of that annoying twin business (I know many disagree with me on this!)

Under the Whispering Door by TJ Klune

Rating: 4 out of 5.

I loved this just as much as I loved The House on the Cerulean Sea. Where Stone Blind failed at making me cry, I was shedding tears all over the place for this book. Yet at the same time it made me so cozy. Great read for the plane or train.

The Bridge Kingdom by Danielle L. Jensen

Rating: 4 out of 5.

This is such a fun romantasy! I read it in about a day and have since pretty much forgotten it, but it really did the job. Good tension, twists I didn’t quite predict, and an amazing FMC. The worldbuilding is also really creative. I truly have nothing negative to say about this except that it was quite short! If you have ever liked any romantasy in your life, you’re pretty much guaranteed to like The Bridge Kingdom.
